Description: |
A crow-sized hawk that frequents residential areas. Adult is gray on the back and head, and has horizontal orange barring on the breast and belly. Juvenile has a brown back and head, and vertical brown streaks on the breast and belly. The similar Sharp-shinned Hawk (A. striatus) is a winter resident and is smaller (11 inches, Blue Jay-sized). Consult a field guide for other differences. |

Hardwood forest. Tolerant of human disturbance and has adapted to urban and suburban areas. |
Interesting Fact: |
Those who feed birds may see this bird of prey chase backyard birds. This may be distressing to the homeowner but it is a natural process that should be welcomed. You can provide escape cover for birds by placing feeders near trees, shrubs, and brushpiles. |
