Description: Large-headed with a big bill and shaggy crest. The crest and back are blue. Adult male has a blue collar. Adult female has a blue collar with a rusty wash, rusty sides, and a rusty band below the blue collar. Juvenile birds resemble adult females, but lack the rusty band.
Voice: A harsh, dry, unsteady rattle.

Habitat: Streams, rivers and lakes surrounded by a variety of upland habitats.
Interesting Fact: Kingfishers are one of the few birds capable of stalling flight and hovering in place. As it hovers it scans for food, then plunge-dives into the water to catch fish.
